Meningococcal group B (MenB) bacteria can cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses, including meningitis (infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) and sepsis (blood poisoning). These illnesses can develop quickly and require urgent medical treatment.
Who can get the MenB vaccine?
The NHS is currently offering a free MenB vaccination programme to certain young people at higher risk of infection. This includes:
- Born between 1st September 2007 and 31st August 2008, or
- Born on or after 21st July 2001 and are starting university for the first time in autumn, or
- Born on or after 21st July 2001 and are starting some residential further education colleges for the first time in autumn 2026 as a residential student
When you go for your vaccinations, staff may ask which of these groups you are in. Please have your offer of a college or university place with you to show them.
Two doses of the vaccine are required, given at least 28 days apart, for full protection.
How do I get the vaccine?
MenB vaccinations are being delivered through participating community pharmacies, rather than GP practices.

- Book your 1st dose online at www.nhs.uk/book-menb, (available only to those born between 1st September 2007 and 31st August 2008)
- Find a walk-in site at www.nhs.uk/menb-walk-in (all eligible groups above)
